Te Reo Mäori i te Taitokerau.
In this section we are trying to bring together information about the Mäori language in Taitokerau -- its status, maintenance, revitalization, character, development and so on. The collection will start with what we have available -- reports of work done by members of the "Te Wahapü whanau over a forty-year period in the second half of the twentieth century, and whatever other reports, materials and scholarly studies that may come to hand. We will concentrate on Te Taitokeray, broadly construed, but will include material from other districts if it becomes available and users of this web site ask for it.
Obviously, this page will be "under development" probably for as long as it is here, so refresh your browser when you look at it just in case there's something new since your last visit. We have literally dozens of files to index, and they won't appear here overnight! If you have material that you think could be made available here, we would be very pleased to get it. Te Reo Rangatira i te Taitokerau - General & Background Studies
Many of the documents made available here will have been written one or more decades ago, and most will range further than Taitokerau alone. However, they provide benchmarks against which we can measure, and assess, the changes that have taken place since they were written.

“"'We're all mixed up now anyway!' The revitalization of Maori in a small community”, by Nena B.E. Benton. Presented at the Symposium on the Sociology of Language and Speakers of Other Languages in Honor of Joshua A. Fishman's 65th Birthday, 1991 Linguistics Institute, University of California, Santa Cruz, July 8‑11, 1991. This paper looks at the efforts made by the people of Karetu to maintain the Maori language in the 1970s and 80s, with very little assistance from outside agencies despite the increasing official emphasis on the value of te reo.
