Is
Hannibal Lecter real? |
| No,
though "real life" templates for
Lecter may be various mixes of Jeffery Dahmer,
Ted Bundy, 50s psycho Ed Gein, or the "Russian
Hannibal" as he was called when convicted,
Andrei Chikatilo. |
 |
|
What's
up with Lecter's choice of dinner? |
| Something
which is sadly lacking in the cinematic
version of Hannibal is a little bit of crucial
background history to Hannibal Lecter. That
is, the story of Mischa, his sister. If
you haven't read the book (and you should,
it's highly superior to the film) the Web
Site Hannibal
Lecter: Fact & Fiction has a good
breakdown of the importance of this part
of Lecter's pyschological outlook / personal
background, and the particular way this
has manifested itself in his later life:
"Behavioral science has taught us that
serial killers aren’t born that way; they’re
formed by a combination of factors that
begins in childhood. "

|
How
many movies are there featuring Lecter? |
| 4
- Manhunter
[1986], Silence
of the Lambs [1991], Hannibal
[2001] and Red
Dragon [2002]. |
 |
|
What
actors have played Lecter? |
| Two
actors have played Lecter. Scottish actor
Brian
Cox was the first to play Dr Lecktor [the
original spelling] in Michael Mann's 1986
film "Manhunter"],
while Anthony
Hopkins completed all the other Films
[Silence...,
Hannibal
and Red
Dragon] in the role of Lecter. |
 |
|
How
has the character of Lecter fared at the hands
of the critics, officials and armchair ones
alike? |
| Silence
of the Lambs allowed Hopkins to take out
the Oscar for Best Actor, not to mention the
other four that the movie pulled in as well
[Actress (Foster) Director (Demme), Screenplay
(Tally) and Picture], and Manhunter
fans would turn Lecter himself loose on you
if you think that movie is anything less than
the ultimate. Lecter has a place in movie
history forever. Enough said :) |
 |
|
Is
there a real Lecter roaming around? |
| Not
known at present :) A murderer who might resemble
Hannibal-like qualities the closest would
probably be Andrei Chikatilo, who was dubbed
the "Russian Hannibal" by the press
when he was brought to trial. |
 |
|
Is
there an actual technical term for what Lecter
does? |
| Yes
- anthropophagy. That is to say, he
is a consumer of human flesh, ie. what we
would call a "cannibal". |
 |
|
Should
Lecter be considered "evil"? Or
did he have at least some redeeming features? |
Depends
on your opinion of the more memorable victims:
Raspail, a musician who was annoying onstage
and offstage, Chilton, an overbearing bureaucrat
who has the tendency to annoy madmen even
more than they should safely be, Krendler,
a sleazy bureaucrat hellbent on destroying
other peoples careers to reach for the top,
Pazzi the crooked cop, and more besides. Seems
to me he has a habit of getting rid of the
people that don't need to be here anyway,
so who'd really miss them - Lecter is performing
a public service! |
 |
|
How
many times does Barney pop up & is he
the same actor all the time? |
| Barney
pops up in Silence.... We seem him
again in Hannibal and also Red Dragon.
The actor Frankie Faison plays Barney in all
three movies. |
 |
|
Besides
Hopkins and Cox who did play him, were any
other actors considered for the role of Lecter? |
| Yes
- Robert Duvall (mmm, nah ...) and Gene Hackman
(hmmm, it'd be interesting ... considering
his performance in "The Chamber"
as a convicted killer, he was pretty good
at that .. ) amongst other notables. In the
most lucky quirk of fate [I think], Michelle
Pfeiffer was considered for the role of Clarice
Starling (can you imagine ... yeesh) but passed
over once Jodie Foster was secured (phew).
